Birkenstock Fit & Care FAQ Guide

Quick answer

Birkenstocks should fit with your heel flush in the heel cup and your toes approaching but not touching the front lip, with the straps snug enough to keep your foot from sliding. They come in regular and narrow widths—some styles, like the Gizeh and Mayari, run narrower than the Arizona. To care for them, seal the exposed cork every few months, clean the footbed with a footbed cleaner or fine-grit sandpaper, and air-dry away from heat if they get wet.

Pro TipThe single most important fit factor isn't the gap behind your heel—it's whether the footbed's arch lands directly under your own arch. Get that right, keep the straps snug, and everything else falls into place.

With Birkenstocks remaining one of the most popular comfort footwear brands year after year, here are the questions we hear most often about fit and care—with the time-tested answers we give customers in our stores.

Woman relaxing in Birkenstock sandals — firm, supportive comfort

How does Birkenstock comfort and support work?

Birkenstock comfort is built on firm, orthopedically correct support rather than soft cushioning. Like a quality mattress, your feet need solid support and correct positioning for real, all-day comfort.

It would make sense to think a softer, cushier shoe would be more comfortable. In practice, the Birkenstock footbed features proper arch support, a deep heel cup, and room in the toe area to distribute weight evenly across the whole foot—which improves posture and balance when you walk.

The footbed is made of resilient cork and latex shaped to follow the contours of a healthy foot. The cork-latex blend is pliable and reacts to your natural body warmth, so over time it molds to your individual foot. That is why many long-term wearers say the longer you wear them, the more comfortable they get.

How should Birkenstocks fit? Should I leave space behind my heel?

How Birkenstocks should fit: heel flush in the heel cup, arch aligned

Size so that your heel sits flush in the heel cup and your toes approach, but do not touch, the front lip. The single most important factor is where the arch of the footbed lands under your own arch—not how much space sits behind your heel.

Fit is personal: some wearers like a little extra room front and back, while others prefer a snug, almost hug-like fit. Either can work, as long as the footbed arch and the toe bar (the small bump under your toes) line up with your foot.

Strap tension matters just as much. Too loose, and your foot slides around on the footbed, throwing off arch placement and support. We’ve found over the years it’s best to keep the straps relatively snug—the goal is a happy medium between stability and comfort. You can browse fits for women’s Birkenstock styles and men’s Birkenstock styles to compare silhouettes.

What kind of leather does Birkenstock use?

Birkenstock selects high-quality leathers and tans them with vegetable dyes, so there are no synthetic irritants against your skin. Vegetable tanning also keeps the pores of the leather open so it can breathe.

Some materials, such as the oiled leathers, show the raw grain of the hide and will have subtle natural variations from pair to pair—that’s a feature of genuine leather, not a defect.

Do soft footbed Birkenstocks fit differently than regular footbeds?

The shape and size of a soft footbed are identical to the regular (firm) footbed. However, the cushier soft footbed lets your foot spread a little more, so if you’re at the upper edge of a size in the regular footbed, consider going up one size in the soft footbed.

Soft-footbed models also add an extra foam layer between the footbed and sole. This softens impact on hard surfaces while still supporting the natural flex of your foot.

Do Birkenstocks come in narrow widths?

Yes. Birkenstock makes both regular and narrow widths. In wider-fitting styles like the Arizona, Florida, and Milano, many people with medium-width feet still fit comfortably in a narrow.

As a rule of thumb from our fittings, a narrow in those styles fits roughly a women’s A–C width and a men’s B–D width. That’s slightly broader than Birkenstock’s own guidance, but it reflects 30+ years of fitting these sandals in person.

Which Birkenstock styles run the narrowest?

The Gizeh and Mayari run narrower than most other models. Many customers who need a narrow width in a wider style like the Arizona actually fit the regular width in the Gizeh or Mayari.

If you have a narrow foot, those two are a good starting point—see current options in women’s Birkenstock.

Why does the toe post on my Gizeh hurt between my toes?

Usually it’s because the instep strap is too loose, letting your foot slide forward so the webbing of your toes bumps into the toe post. Start by fully opening the adjustable instep strap, then re-fasten it snugly so your foot stays back in the footbed.

Once your foot sits properly in the heel cup and doesn’t slide forward, the toe post should no longer press uncomfortably between your toes.

How much care do Birkenstocks actually need?

Not much—care is optional, but it extends their life. The single most valuable thing you can do is seal the exposed cork regularly.

We’ve seen customers wear their Birks for years without ever treating them and stay perfectly happy. That said, applying Cork Sealer every few months (if you wear them daily) protects the soles and preserves the long-lasting support of the cork footbed. You’ll find sealer and other supplies in our shoe care collection.

How do I remove dark spots from Birkenstock footbeds?

Birkenstock footbed with dark spots before cleaning

Use a footbed cleaner and refresher for routine cleaning, and fine-grit sandpaper to gently sand off built-up darkness on older footbeds. Work slowly so you don’t remove too much material.

The Birkenstock Deluxe Shoe Care Kit includes a Multi-Purpose Cleaning Tool and a Footbed Cleaner/Refresher that keep footbeds looking new and odor-free. For older Birks that have absorbed foot oils and sweat, a small piece of fine-grit sandpaper can literally sand the darkness off the footbed. Done carefully, it lifts most of the discoloration and revives the natural nap of the leather—just don’t go overboard.

What happens if Birkenstocks get wet?

They can get wet occasionally and still last for years—the key is how you dry them. Air-dry them in a shaded spot away from any heat source; never near a stove, fireplace, radiator, or heater, which can shrink the soles.

It’s best to avoid prolonged moisture, but a rain shower won’t ruin your Birks. For clogs or closed shoes, stuff them with wadded newspaper to absorb moisture while they dry. Once dry, apply Birkenstock Stain & Water Repellent (included in the Deluxe Shoe Care Kit) to protect them going forward.
